Can a non magnetic attracting metal be turned into a magnet?

i bought a fossil wallet and their are two metal balls on the inside and i thought i would be cool if those were magnetic to keep the wallet closed by itself. i tried swiping the magnet across the metal to turn it into a magnet but their was no such luck. i think the metal might be stainless steel because i know fossil uses stainless steel in a lot of their products. so any ideas on how to turn these pieces of metal into a magnet. p.s the metal had the faintest attraction like it wont hold itself to the metal when you tilt the wallet to the side but you can feel the slightest fraction of resistance when you lift it off the metal.
